Windows special directories or windows environment variables are Windows default directories or location where all the data and user information including programs, Windows drivers, My documents etc are stored. These directories may vary on different version of Windows and PC/Laptop. But you can access these folders using these windows special directories shortcuts. These shortcut short codes are useful when you are try to create a Windows folder shortcut, like- %userprofile% will open your Windows user directory, no matter what user name you have in you Windows.

Here is the list of all Windows special directories shortcuts you can use to directly access the default folder for Windows. Type these short codes in Windows Run dialogue box to access special folders set by Windows environment path variables. Press Win+R to open Windows Run dialogue box.

  • %SystemRoot% – Opens Windows folder C:\Windows
  • %Temp% – Opens temporary file Folder C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Temp
  • %UserProfile% – Opens your user’s profile C:\Users\{username}
  • %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup – Opens Windows 10 Startup location for program shortcuts





In addition there are several other short codes which can be used to open specific Windows application like you can type “Calc” to open calculator and “mspaint” for Paint.
